Mission Statement:
The Maine Marine Science Consortium brings together organizations across Maine that are advancing ocean science, education, innovation, and community impact. By building connections, sharing knowledge and resources, and identifying opportunities for collaboration, the consortium facilitates a more unified and resilient marine science sector for Maine.

Why we work together
Maine is home to an extraordinary range of institutions and people working on behalf of the ocean. The consortium was created to help those organizations connect more intentionally, align around shared priorities, and pursue opportunities that no single institution could tackle alone.
Together, members work across research, education, policy, workforce development, entrepreneurship, and community engagement. The consortium creates space to strengthen relationships, share resources, support one another, and turn ideas into coordinated action that benefits Maine’s coastal communities, industries, and ecosystems.

“Maine is fortunate to have so many great institutions and such passionate, dedicated people working on its behalf. I was amazed at the enthusiastic response from across the state to the idea of forming a consortium, and I believe we are taking an important step together toward the resilient communities, industries, and ecosystems we all want to see.”
Deborah Bronk, President & CEO, Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences

“At this critical time for Maine’s working waterfronts, collaboration is essential. The Maine Marine Science Consortium provides an important framework for maximizing our strengths and impact. Practically, this means we are standing together in support of Maine’s island and coastal communities and putting our collective weight against the most challenging issues.”
Kim Hamilton, President, Island Institute
Building Momentum Together
The consortium launched in January 2024 and has continued to gather regularly to promote connection and collaboration across its membership. Recent meetings have brought together institutional leaders, researchers, resource managers, entrepreneurs, and staff from across Maine to discuss priorities ranging from education and innovation to shared resources, state advocacy, and workforce connections.
Employee mixers have also helped staff across member organizations meet one another, learn about each other’s work, and deepen the relationships that make statewide collaboration possible.
